Debating about the Challenges of Industry 5.0 and European future

We are happy to share with you that the second round table on European Industry 5.0 concluded successfully. The central concept of the Chair is European Industry 5.0, and also the roundtable was dedicated to this topic—a vision that represents not just the next phase of industrial evolution, but a profound rethinking of how industry serves society, the environment, and people.

At its core, Industry 5.0 rests on three fundamental pillars:human-centricity, sustainability, and resilience. Together, these principles redefine progress—not as output alone, but as impact.

We were honored to have three distinguished keynote speakers with us today, each bringing expertise and insight into one of these pillars.

Our first speaker Dr Fabio D’Andrea focused on sustainability—a pillar that is no longer optional, but essential. European industry is uniquely positioned to lead the transition toward circular models, reduced emissions, and responsible resource use, aligning economic growth with environmental stewardship.

Our second keynote speaker Dr Edmondo Grassi explored human-centricity—reminding us that technology must enhance, not replace, human capabilities. In this vision, workers are not just operators in a system, but creative, skilled individuals whose well-being, inclusion, and empowerment are central to industrial innovation.

Finally, our third keynote speaker Dr Matej Makarovič, our Dean, addressed resilience—a concept that has gained urgency in recent years. From supply chain disruptions to global uncertainties, resilience means building systems that can adapt, endure, and continue to deliver value under changing conditions.

Together, these three perspectives form a holistic vision of Industry 5.0—one where competitiveness and responsibility go hand in hand.

The roundtable was not only about listening, but about engaging. It was an opportunity to reflect on where we stand, to challenge assumptions, and to explore how we can collectively shape an industry that is innovative, inclusive, and future-proof.
